Short drama is no longer well described as a niche mobile format.

Sensor Tower’s June 2026 State of Short Drama Apps 2026 reports more than 850 million global short-drama app downloads in Q1 2026, up about 140% year over year. Estimated IAP revenue across the App Store and Google Play reached roughly $750 million, up about 20% year over year.

Downloads have reached mainstream-app scale

Sensor Tower says six short-drama apps ranked among the world’s Top 40 apps by downloads in Q1 2026, with FreeReels at No. 8.

The report’s download figures are estimates from the App Store and Google Play and exclude pre-installs, re-downloads, and third-party Android stores. They are best used as a market-trend view rather than settlement figures.

Revenue is still growing, but slower than downloads

The difference between +140% download growth and +20% IAP growth matters. Much of the new user scale is coming from markets with different payment behavior and monetization economics than mature high-IAP markets.

DramaBox and ReelShort are near $140M each for the quarter

Sensor Tower reports that DramaBox and ReelShort each generated close to $140 million in Q1 2026 IAP revenue, keeping them at the top of the category by revenue.

Southeast Asia, Latin America, and India drive most new scale

In Q1 2026, Southeast Asia represented about 32% of global short-drama downloads, Latin America 23%, and India 22%—together more than three quarters of downloads.

This is why the next phase of global short drama is not one unified market. Pricing, payment willingness, advertising economics, localization, and content preference differ materially by region.

Engagement is rising as well

Sensor Tower reports global average daily time spent in short-drama apps at about 25 minutes by April 2026, up 85% versus January 2025. Southeast Asia approached 40 minutes per day.

What this means for platforms and systems

A scalable product now needs more than playback: localization, flexible monetization, market-level analytics, content operations, and reliable user/transaction state. The competitive question is increasingly how well a product retains and monetizes different markets, not whether short drama has demand at all.
